A TV station in
Austin, TX is reporting (and Drudge is boosting) that Cindy Sheehan announced she's a finalist for this year's Nobel Peace Prize.
"What I really hope to do with it is to inspire people to do what they can to make the world a better place and to let them know that one person really can make a difference," Cindy Sheehan.
Sheehan also announced at the signing that she's a finalist for a Nobel Peace Prize.
I know that Cindy is a semi-regular poster here, and I admire her courage and gumption last summer in setting up Camp Casey in Crawford.
But...
Cindy Sheehan should not win the Nobel Peace Prize.
For one thing, her crusade, as noble as it is, is not on par with the kind of work which has been recognized by the Nobel Committee over the years. She pales in comparison to the current winner, the IAEA, in terms of impact for peace in the world.
Secondly, Cindy has aligned herself with some of the crazies of the world...most notably Venezualan President Hugo Chavez. The enemy of my enemy is not always my friend, Cindy...just because Chavez rails against Bush and calls him the Devil doesn't mean you should align yourself with him. It demeans your cause and all of those who would agree with you on the larger point of ending the war in Iraq.
Lastly, such an award would be a direct international rebuke of the Bush Administration in particular, and of the United States in general. Yes, the man is an embarrassment; yes, his policies are hurting us in the world.
But is GWB really the biggest threat to the world? Really? And is Cindy the most effective instrument to stop GWB? Really?
Please, Nobel Committee...don't make a tragic mistake and award this prize to Cindy Sheehan.
